ko te mana o te waiata
kei roto i te mita, te rangi,
me te taupatupatu o te reo
The power of the song
is in the metre, the tune,
and the lively rhythm of the language.
Maori and Music cannot be seen as something separate from Te Reo and Nga Tikanga. Te Reo is essential to the waiata/song by which Maori express feelings and through which wairua, the spirit, is heard.
Songs and chants all have their place, at hui and at other gatherings, and different songs may have different purposes.
